  1. Орг. момент. Целеполагание.

We’ve learnt much information about the geographical position of different countries and how they influence people’s lives. And today we’ll speak about other planets, if to be more exact about the Mars. You should work with the article from Telegraph and do the following tasks.
If you want to get a “5” you are to work with Card C.
If you want to get a “4” you are to work with Card B.
If you want to get a “3” you are to work with Card A.
What mark would you like to get today?
You will have 40 minutes to do the tasks. Don’t forget to register your achievements in the chart.
Good luck!

2. Работа с разноуровневыми карточками по газетной статье «Opportunity: Nasa rover breaks Mars planet probe record »
Источник: http://www.telegraph.co.uk

A NASA robot buggy, Opportunity, has become the longest operating space probe on the surface of Mars.
For decades the space agency’s Viking 1 lander spacecraft held the record for the longest-surviving mission after toiling away six years and 116 days on the red planet.

But Opportunity, one of the twin rovers that landed in 2004, has now surpassed that record.
This week it broke the Viking 1′s lander record, which operated between 1976 and 1982.

“The expectation is that Opportunity will keep on going and going and going,” said John Callas, project manager, of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, at Pasadena, California.

Unlike Viking 1, which conducted science experiments in one spot, the six-wheel, solar-powered Opportunity has been on the go, driving into craters and peering at rocks along the way.

Opportunity’s discoveries included mineral deposits called “blueberries” resembling a ring around a bathtub – the first clear evidence that there once was liquid water on Mars.

After two years exploring a crater called Victoria, Opportunity is currently on a slow eight-mile drive across rippled plains to another crater, Endeavour.

Observations of Endeavour from orbit show the presence of clay minerals which may offer clues to life.
Opportunity’s twin rover, Spirit, on the other side of Mars has been silent since March 22 after becoming trapped in sand.

Mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory hope it will reawaken from hibernation and resume contact after sunlight reboosts its batteries.
If that happens, Spirit will take the endurance record from Opportunity because it landed three weeks before its twin.
The rovers’ chief investigator, Steve Squyres, added: “Those minerals form under wet conditions more neutral than the wet, acidic environment that formed the sulphates we’ve found with Opportunity.”
“The clay minerals at Endeavour speak to a time when the chemistry was much friendlier to life than the environments that formed the minerals Opportunity has seen so far.”
“We want to get there to learn their context. Was there flowing water? Were there steamvents? Hot springs? We want to find out.”
Card A (задания на отметку «3»)
Say if the statements are true / false/ unknown

  1. Viking 1 lander spacecraft toiled away seven years and 116 days.
  2. “Opportunity” landed on the red planet in 2004.
  3. “Opportunity’s” mission was scheduled to last just three months.
  4. The six-wheel solar-powered Viking 1 is always on the go.
  5. “Opportunity” discovered “blueberries”.
  6. There wasn’t any liquid water on Mars.
  7.  “Opportunity” has its twin — “Spirit”.
  8. “Opportunity” explored two craters: Victoria and Endeavour.

Card B (задания на отметку «4»)
Put in the chronological order.

  1. We want to find out, to learn their context.
  2. “Opportunity” surpassed the record of Viking 1.
  3. “Opportunity’s” twin rover, Spirit, trapped in sand.
  4. “Opportunity” drove into craters and peered at rocks along the way.
  5. “Opportunity” landed three weeks before its twin.
  6. “Blueberries” were the first proofs that there once was liquid water.
  7. Viking 1 had been toiling away during 6 years and 116 days.

Card C (задания на отметку «5»)
Answer the questions.

  1. What planet is described in the article?
  2. Where did Viking 1 toil away?
  3. What was the first evidence of liquid water on the Mars?
  4. What department learns Mars?
  5. What does “Opportunity” investigate on Mars?
  6. How long did the mission of Viking 1 last?
  7. What do investigators hope to find out on the red planet?
  8. What is the success of operating “Opportunity” on Mars?
  9. What space probe surpassed the record of Viking 1?
  10. What did “blueberries” resemble?

2. Retell the text or make the referring of this article.
Keys.
Card A: 1.F, 2.T, 3.U, 4.F, 5.Y, 6.F, 7.T.
Card B: 7, 2, 4, 6, 3, 5, 1,
Card C: 1. Mars, 2. On the red planet, 3.blueberries, 4. Nasa’s Jet propulsion Laboratory, 5. Craters, rocks, 6. 6 years and 116 days, 7. Steamvents, hot springs, flowing water, 8. Blueberries, 9. “Opportunity”, 10. Bathtub.
3.Рефлексия. Teacher: You have done much hard work at the lesson and have learnt many new things. Let’s look at the register and analyze our achievements: students have reached Level C, students-Level B and students have done their best. So you see that still there is much to be done. I thank you for the lesson and wish you every success in your studies.
4. Домашнее задание. Read the text once again and write down the notes about the difference between the Mars and the Earth.
